Why Are Canada Geese So Attracted to Golf Courses?

If you own or manage a golf course, chances are you’ve had to deal with Canada geese at some point. It always starts with a goose or two, but then more and more show up. Before long, they’re all over your fairways and greens, bothering your players and damaging your course. You’re probably wondering, “What’s going on? Why do these geese love my golf course so much?!”

In this blog, we’re going to explain why geese are so attracted to your golf course and what you can do about it. Let’s start with the why:

So, Why Exactly Does Your Golf Course Attract Geese?

Your Golf Course is Their Favorite Meal

Your golf course has a lot of short, tender grass, which is exactly what Canada geese are looking for. They like short grass because it’s easier to digest and has more nutrients than tall grass. Your fairways and greens are like a buffet that gets restocked regularly. Plus, unlike wild areas, golf courses don’t change much. This consistency is also attractive because geese like to return to the same nesting area every year.

Your Water Features Make Them Feel Safe

Golf courses with water features are even more attractive to geese. Ponds and lakes give geese a way to escape from coyotes and other predators. If they see a coyote or something that just feels off, they can fly onto your golf course’s pond until the coast is clear. Canada geese also use ponds to rest and bathe themselves.

Your Golf Course is an Open Area

Geese love open areas without many trees or bushes. Your golf course’s openness makes your land very attractive to Canada geese, who are always on the lookout for predators—it gives them plenty of time to spot danger and react. Predators, on the other hand, prefer cover. When there aren’t any hiding spots, predators are less likely to hunt prey in that area. So it’s a win-win situation for the geese—there are fewer predators, and it’s easier to see them if they show up.

Fewer People and Predictable Activity

Compared to other public areas, there aren’t many people on a golf course at any given time. And the people who are on the course are usually nonthreatening. Golfers walk or ride golf carts slowly and follow the same paths over and over. Over time, Canada geese get used to your golfers and stop seeing them as a threat. The calm atmosphere makes geese feel right at home.

Golf Courses Have Ideal Nesting Areas

Golf courses offer a lot of quiet areas near water. Geese love to nest on pond edges and small islands because these spots give them cover without limiting their visibility. Your golf course is also perfect for nesting for all of the other reasons we’ve already discussed above:

  • Lots of short, tender grass
  • Near water features
  • Open area
  • Not many predators or people around

Why Geese Are a Big Problem on Golf Courses

It might not seem like a big deal when a few geese congregate on your golf course. Some club owners assume they’ll eventually move on. Unfortunately, this rarely happens. Canada geese can’t resist the combination of short grass, an open space, a quiet atmosphere, and the aquatic habitats your golf course provides. Without active management, your goose population will most likely come back every year.

Here’s why that can be a big problem:

Goose Droppings

Geese poop. A LOT. A single goose can leave over a pound of droppings every day. When you have dozens of geese on your course, those droppings add up fast. This leads to:

  • Messy fairways and cart paths
  • Slippery walking paths that may lead to injuries
  • Extra cleanup time for your maintenance crews
  • Risk of bacterial contamination

Turf Damage

Geese don’t just graze lightly, here and there. They eat a lot and they pull grass out by the roots, especially in short-cut areas like your fairways and tee boxes. You’ll have slower grass recovery and have to pay more to reseed your greens.

Aggressive Behavior

Canada geese are highly territorial, especially during nesting season. They may hiss or even charge at your golfers if they get too close. These encounters are most common near the water features on golf courses because that’s where geese like to nest. Aggressive geese are dangerous to both your players and your maintenance crews.

How Our Border Collies Can Help

One of the Best Goose Control Methods

When people call us about golf geese, they’ve usually tried a few goose control methods already. Noise devices and decoys can be effective for a while, but geese are smart—they adapt to fake threats pretty quickly. In our experience, active management with border collies is one of the most effective ways to handle bird control on a golf course.

When you partner with Goose Masters, we’ll visit your property regularly with our trained team of border collies to “herd” your geese and scare them away. To geese, a border collie looks and moves like a real predator. After a while, the geese will get the message that your golf course isn’t a safe place to nest. Our dogs don’t hurt the birds, and we don’t rely on physical removal. We just apply predator pressure to control geese behavior.
